I want to be scared by the alphabet

Updated: Jul 20, 2018

An introduction to the theme of my upcoming book reviews.

Like many of you, I have a lot of favorite things, but one of my favorite favorites is a good-old-fashioned alphabetical list. I recently went through some boxes that were in storage for four years and came across my 2004 copy of VideoHound’s Golden Movie Retriever. It’s a film guide, its full title being The Complete Guide to Movies on Videocassette and DVD (remember those things?). It rates movies using dog bones: four dog bones for the best films, one dog bone for terrible films, and a flat-out woof! for movies that make you wish you’d never been born into a world that could make such painfully bad movies. A few weeks ago, I started tackling the four-dog-bone movies from A-Z, with my most recent viewing being the 1950 All About Eve. If you haven’t seen it, watch it. Yes, it’s old. But Bette Davis is perfectly flawed in it, the dialogue is witty, and the storyline is disturbing if you let it get under your skin.

But I digress. This blog will not be all about All About Eve. Nor will it be about my outdated VideoHound film guide. Primarily, this blog will combine my need for moving through life in an alphabetical fashion with another one of my favorite favorites - being scared.

I grew up reading R.L. Stine, Christopher Pike, Stephen King, and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. My love for feeling terrified has not gone away. I intend to use this blog to review YA books that fall into the Horror/ Supernatural/ Mystery/ Suspense genres. Ghost stories are my truest love, but I’m also a sucker for vampires, zombies, demons, murderers, stalkers, and all things that make you scared to look over your shoulder.

The first book I review will be by an author whose last name starts with A. The next by an author whose last name starts with B. And so on. When I get all the way through Z, I’ll start again! I'm all set with what to read for A, B, and C, but if you have any suggestions for future letters, send them my way!
